Overview

Applying for a UK visa from the United States

US citizens do not need a visa to enter the UK for visits up to 6 months, but from 2026 must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. For longer stays — work, study, family — a full visa is required. Skilled Worker and Student routes are the most common long-stay applications from the US.

This guide is being expanded. For the most detailed information, see the relevant visa route page linked below or our latest blog guides.
